The Pro Bono Project offers the unique opportunity to positively impact the lives of low-income individuals in Southern Nevada. The clients listed below have been accepted by our program and are currently on our waiting list for pro bono representation. Clients have been prescreened for financial income eligibility and their cases have been selected based on a number of factors, including the merits of their case, the availability of volunteers, and the reasonableness of the client.

Abuse/Neglect Cases - Children's Attorneys Project

Case Number: 2023-013185 (Pending Placement)

Two boy siblings ages, 2-year old and 8-month old were removed by DFS due to ongoing domestic violence instigated by the father against the mother. There have been multiple calls to law enforcement and the Department with regards to father’s violent outbursts toward mother in the presence of the children. DFS has intervened, and once the case resolves, the mother allows the father back into the home and the cycle continues. The children are placed with a maternal aunt at the moment. At this time, these children are in need of an attorney to represent their legal wishes and rights as to permanency, placement, visitation and to ensure appropriate services are in place. Case Number: 2023-015490 (Urgent)

Two sibling girls ages 4-year old and 3-year old were removed from the home and are now in the protective custody of DFS due to parental drug use, improper supervision and lack of resources. Case Number: 2024-001031 (Urgent)

Three siblings, 12-year old boy, 8-year old girl  and 3-year old girl came into the custody of DFS due to inadequate supervision because the parents were being arrested after a search warrant was conducted and methamphetamines and weapons were found. The parents right were terminated in November 2022. However, mother appealed the decision to terminate her parental rights. All the other children have different opinions and wants on the matter.  There are four siblings on this case who have a separate attorney. Two sibling boys ages, 7-year old and 6-year old came into the custody of DFS due to the drug overdose and hospitalization of the mother, lack of resources to provide for the minor children and neglect. A newborn baby boy was removed by DFS due to mother’s extensive mental health issues and the father’s lack of protective capacity. The family has prior history with the department and other minor children have been removed from their care. Two siblings, 17-year old girl and 16-year old boy came into the custody of DFS due to their legal guardians being deceased. The Department has been unable to locate the biological parents to be explored for placement. A 10-year old boy came into the custody of DFS after his mother refused to take physical custody of minor indicating she was not mentally or financially stable. The father was unable to discharge responsibility of minor due to being incarcerated in another state. Two boy siblings ages 2-years old and 9-months old were removed from their home and came into the custody of Family Services due to parental domestic violence, failure to protect from domestic violence, lack of resources and environmental danger. Case Number: 2022-015472

Group of boy siblings ages 15, 8, and 5 years old came into DFS custody over concerns of the parent’s physical abuse of their step-siblings. The step-siblings are the biological children of father on this case and they are the main victims on the case, however, all children were removed. Case Number: 2024-001980

A newborn baby girl came into the custody of DFS due to her mother testing positive for amphetamines and marijuana at the time of delivery. There are also allegations of impending dangers present and the parent’s history of domestic violence. The parents also lack resources to provide for the minor’s basics needs. At this time, this baby girl is in need of an attorney to represent her wishes and legal rights as to permanency, placement, visitation, and to ensure appropriate services are in place. Case Number: 2024-004842 (Urgent)

A group of four siblings, ages 7-year old, 5-year old, 4-year old and 1-year old were removed from their home and came into the custody of DFS along with their three older siblings, who have a separate case. The minor children were removed due to disclosures of ongoing domestic violence to school personnel by one of the minors. The minor reported that they have suffered extensive corporal punishment by their father. The family has extensive history with CPS and other ongoing cases. At this time, these young children are in need of an attorney to represent their legal wishes and needs as to permanency, placement, visitation, and to ensure appropriate services are in place. A 4-month old baby girl was removed from her home and came into the custody of DFS due to concerns regarding parent’s ability to provide for minor. Both parents reported to be homeless and there are also reports of domestic violence between them. The mother has also been diagnosed with pervasive development disorder. At this time, this baby girl is in need of an attorney to represent her legal rights and wishes as to permanency, placement, visitation, and to ensure appropriate services are in place. A 5-month infant boy came into the custody of DFS due to parental incarceration. The parents were unable to discharge their responsibilities to and for the infant because they are both in custody. The parents are facing sentencing on an abuse/neglect case that resulted in bodily harm to their older children. At this time, this infant boy is in need of an attorney to represent his legal wishes and rights as to permanency, placement, visitation, and to ensure appropriate services are in place. Case Number: 2024-003545 (Urgent)

A 15-year-old boy was removed from his home and is now in the custody of DFS due to allegations of inadequate supervision. Minor was living with his maternal grandmother under guardianship while his mother was in prison. After the grandmother passed away, the minor was being cared for by his uncle. However, his uncle is no longer able to care for him because he alleges the minor has become aggressive towards him. His mother is still in prison and his father refuses to take custody of the minor. At this time, this minor needs an attorney to represent his legal wishes and rights as to permanency, placement, visitation, and to ensure appropriate services are in place. Two boy siblings ages, 12-year old and 10-year old were removed from their home and are now in the custody of DFS due to allegations of physical risk and inadequate supervision by their mother. At the time of police’s intervention, it was noted that the mother was under the influence of drugs and she admitted to having used it. The mother also suffers from mental health issues which seem to be untreated. At this time, these two young boys are in need of an attorney to represent their legal wishes and rights as to permanency, placement, visitation, and to ensure appropriate services are in place. Two siblings, ages 7-year old boy and 6-year old girl were removed from their home and are now in the custody of DFS due to Mother’s drug use, mental health issues and lack of resources. It was reported that the mother’s drug use and untreated mental health conditions compromise her ability to care for the children. The father is reported to be deceased. Two siblings, an 8-year old girl and a 5-year old boy were removed from their home and are now in the custody of DFS due to mother’s lack of protective capacity. The minor girl was sexually abused by her step-father, and mother neglected to protect the minor children. It is unknown if the father’s to the minor’s have established paternity. They are both serving time for crimes committed in separate cases. Case Number: 2024-006696 (Pending Placement)

A group of siblings ages, 4-year old girl, 3-year old girl, and infant baby boy were removed from their home along with their two older brothers, who have a separate cases. The Department removed the children after allegations for lack of protective capacity and improper supervision by their mother. The mother informed the Department about potential risk of sexual abuse to the oldest boys by their grandfather. Despite, the mother continued to allow their grandfather to have access to all the minor children, including to live in the same home. At this time, these young children are in need of an attorney to represent their wishes and legal rights as to permanency, placement, visitation, and to ensure appropriate services are in place. Case Number: 2024-006712

A group sibling of three siblings, ages, 12-year old girl, 2-year old boy and 1-year girl old were removed from their home along with their two older siblings, who have separate cases. The minors are now in the custody of DFS due to allegations of physical abuse, failure to protect and threat of harm. The one-year old infant sustained several unexplained fracture of various ages. After medical review, it was indicated that infant’s injuries are non-accidental in nature and would not exist without negligence or a deliberate act. The minor children have also been exposed to harm because of the parent’s domestic violence history. At this time, these minor children are in need of an attorney to represent their wishes and legal rights as to permanency, placement, visitation, and to ensure appropriate services are in place. Two boy siblings’ ages, 12-year old and 11-year old were removed from their home along with their older siblings, who have a separate case. The minor children are now in the custody of DFS due to allegations of sexual abuse to older sibling, parental drug use, parental domestic violence and failure to protect. The father is currently incarcerated for charges emerging from this case. Case Number: 2023-015478

A group of three-siblings ages, 7-year old girl, 6-year old boy and 2-year old boy came into DFS custody due to ongoing domestic violence between the parents. The family has a long history of domestic violence involving mother and the two fathers of her children. The mother has admitted to participating in the domestic violence and has been assessed as lacking the protective capacity to keep herself and the children out of violent situations at home. At this time, these children are in need of an attorney to represent their wishes and legal rights as to permanency, placement, visitation and to ensure appropriate services are in place. A one-year old infant girl was removed from her home and is now in the custody of DFS due to allegations of physical abuse, parental drug use and domestic violence. The mother was involved in a violent altercation in her home with her mother and siblings while infant was present and was hurt. Mother was arrested and charged with Child Abuse and Neglect. The whereabouts of the father are unknown. Case Number: 2024-003558

A group of three siblings ages, 9-year old, 5-year old, and 1-year old came into the custody of DFS due to allegations of abuse and neglect. The Department has reported that they have become involved with the family on multiple occasions due to mother’s alcohol abuse, and father’s history of domestic violence against mother. Case Number: 2022-013960 (Urgent)

A 14-year old girl was removed from her home along with her four siblings, who have separate cases. The minor is now in the custody of DFS due to parental mental health issues. The mother experiences symptoms of mental health episodes which are inadequately treated and impair her ability to care for the minor. During one of the mother’s episodes, she indicated that she gave the minor a variety of medications. The minor could not be awakened, she was transported to the hospital and diagnosed with Accidental Drug Ingestion. At this time, this young girl is in need of an attorney to represent her wishes and legal rights as to permanency, placement, visitation, and to ensure appropriate services are in place. Case Number: 2019-007707 (Urgent)

An 11-year old girl was removed from her home and came into the custody of DFS due to allegations of sexual abuse by a man her mother knew was a registered Tier I sex offender. At the time that minor disclosed this to the mother, she failed to report to the authorities or protect the minor from the abuse. Mother experiences symptoms of mental health conditions, which are inadequately treated and impair her ability to care for minor. At this time, this minor girl is in need of an attorney to represent her wishes and legal rights as to permanency, placement, visitation, and to ensure appropriate services are in place. Two siblings, a 5-year old girl and a newborn baby boy came into the custody of CCFS due to allegations of parental drug use, improper supervision, and physical and emotional abuse. The mother reported the abuse. The mother reported struggling with drugs, which compromise her ability to care for the minor children. She has a history of drug use and continues to use drugs while the children are under her care. Two sibling girls ages, 7-year old and 6-year old were removed from their home and came into the custody of CCFS due to inappropriate care. Initially, the maternal great grandmother was the primary caretaker for these girls; after she passed away, they went into the care of their maternal grandmother. However, the mother had knowledge that grandmother could not be a caretaker due to having history with drug use. She also has a prior agency substantiation for inadequate supervision. The mother was reported as living in California and also has history of drug and alcohol use. Their father is not involved with the girl’s upbringing. At this time, these two young girls are in need of an attorney to represent their wishes and legal rights as to permanency, placement, visitation, and to ensure appropriate services are in place. Case Number: 2024-005118 (Urgent)

A newborn baby boy was taken into the custody of CCFS due to mother’s drug use compromising her ability to provide proper care for the child. It’s reported that the mother has a history of drug use; she tested positive for methamphetamine and fentanyl at the time of birth. The Agency is working on establishing paternity. At this time, this newborn baby boy is in need of an attorney to represent his wishes and legal rights as to permanency, placement, visitation, and to ensure appropriate services are in place. Case Number: 2024-007154 (Urgent)

Two siblings, ages 11-year old and 9-year old came into the care of CCFS after being returning to Las Vegas area after being previously removed and placed in Arizona in a prior case. The underlying removal was necessitated due to allegations of sexual abuse by the natural father. Both parents continue working on their case plans for the prior case. At this time, these children are in need of an attorney to represent their wishes and legal rights as to permanency, placement, visitation, and to ensure appropriate services are in place. This client is Spanish-speaking and needs assistance filing for divorce due to infidelity and emotional and verbal domestic violence. She and opposing party have been married since 2007 and separated in 2019. There are no children, assets, or debts.

Case Number: 2024-005783 (Pending Placement)

This client needs assistance with filing for divorce. She and adverse party have been married since 2018 and separated a few months ago. There are no children, assets or debts.

Case Number: 2024-006066

This client is Spanish-speaking and needs assistance filing for divorce due to infidelity and emotional and verbal domestic violence. She and opposing party have been married since 2007 and separated in 2019. There are no children, assets, or debts.

Case Number: 2024-006896

This client needs assistance with filing for divorce. She separated from the adverse party in May 2023 due to his infidelity. There is some community property and debt, including a house and car loan. They do not have any children.

Case Number: 2024-006453

This client needs assistance with her custody case. She and the adverse party separated in 2019 due to infidelity. They have one 6-year-old child and the client is seeking sole legal and sole physical custody.

Federal Pro Bono Program

Case Number: 2023-009271

An inmate at Ely State Prison filed a civil rights complaint after he claims he assaulted by two prison officers while handcuffed and shackled in December 2020. He alleges he was choked, kicked, and repeatedly punched while they yelled racist insults at him. He suffered what he felt was a fractured cheek bone, loss of hearing, and an injury to his hand, although it took almost two years to get an x-ray done. He put in a request for medical attention after the incident but was not seen by the nurse practitioner until July 2021. The NP ordered x-rays and gave him 800 mg Ibuprofen for the pain. They did not get him in for x-rays until September 2022. After filing multiple medical kites and grievances, he filed this lawsuit. He claims deliberate indifference to serious medical need in violation of the 8th Amendment and equal protection in violation of the 14th amendment, as well as cruel and unusual punishment/excessive use of force in violation of the 8th Amendment and racial discrimination. He is seeking an attorney through the Federal Pro Bono Program. Next Deadline(s): Case Stayed until pro bono counsel is identified and formally appointed. 

Case Number: 2024-000439

This client alleges that corrections officers incited other inmates to harass and attack him. He sustained injuries from the attack and now suffers from nerve damage. Client also alleges that officers took his personal property away from him and destroyed it without the appeal process.

This client alleges that corrections officers attacked him while incarcerated. He is seeking legal representation for his use of excessive force claim against the officers.

Case Number: 2023-015198

This Nevada prisoner claims that his First Amendment, RLUIPA, and equal protection rights were infringed by policies and practices regarding the food served and the consumable items he wanted for group worship activities. He alleges that the correctional staff deliberately refused to provide him with an adequate kosher diet that conforms with his Jewish faith. 

Case Number: 2024-000994

This client alleges an Eight Amendment violation against corrections staff for deliberate indifference to his serious medical condition and failure to provide appropriate treatment. He further alleges he has suffered and will continue to suffer harm due to the defendant’s excessive delay in treatment. 

Case Number: 2024-001892

This client claims his constitutional rights were violated when jailers were indifferent to his serious medical needs while he was detained at Washoe County Detention Facility. He alleges that he was denied medical attention for a head injury, medications, and proper clothing and blankets for the winter.

Case Number: 2024-005303

This client is incarcerated and seeking assistance with his 1983 claim. He alleges that corrections staff violated his constitutional rights by deliberately failing to provide him with necessary medical treatment.
