Dean Jason Ferris – CAP Volunteer of the Month – February 2020

Jason attended UNLV back in the Running Rebel Tarkanian days.  At that time, there was not a law school in Nevada, so he left to attend Pepperdine School of Law.  His intention was always to try to help people and he focused on becoming a District Attorney.  During law school, he had the opportunity to work for the District Attorney’s Office and the United States Attorney’s Office.  However, after graduating, there was a hiring freeze and he could not continue with either office.  Thereafter, he joined a private firm and started corporate and construction litigation.

While working for a large corporation, he was given latitude to develop a Pro Bono program.  This is when some of his associates brought in a speaker from Legal Aid of Southern Nevada CAP program to detail how they could help and assist.  The firm at that time had multiple attorneys join the program and they were all eager to help and enjoyed making a difference in children’s lives.   Jason feels that helping these children lets him perform work he can really see makes a difference.

When asked to tell us about a memorable client.  His response was; that all of the children that he has represented are memorable.  “From the babies that have been adopted, to the teenagers that are on the path to graduate high school.  While it seems like a small thing, just keeping in contact with these children and making sure that they have visitation with relatives is a huge step to making them feel stable and secure.  After that, I have found that most of the help that these children need can be obtained by verbal request during the Court Status Checks, or by getting all of the decision makers on a phone conference.  The legal community is very helpful to CAP attorneys and I would tell any attorney not to be worried about lack of experience when deciding to take on one of these cases”.

We are humbled to highlight Jason as our volunteer of the month for February.  His continued support, dedication, and commitment to our Pro Bono program make him our volunteer of the month.
