Pro Bono Volunteer of the Month March 2015

Terry Johnson

Terry Johnson comes from a military family and grew up on different military bases throughout his childhood. His family was stationed in Kaiserslautern and Wiesbaden, Germany, and moved to Las Vegas in 1988. Terry currently sits on the State Gaming Control Board, where he has served since 2012.

Terry has been an enthusiastic volunteer with the Pro Bono Project since 2013. Over the past year, he has accepted four new pro bono cases with a broad spectrum of practice areas including two divorce cases, one abuse/neglect case through the Children’s Attorneys Project, and one appeal through the Supreme Court Appellate Pro Bono Program. Terry is a true VOLUNTEER in that Legal Aid Center never has to ASK Terry to take a case. When he finishes a case, he simply visits the Pro Bono Project website to review case summaries, finds a client he can assist, and contacts Legal Aid Center to accept the case. He also volunteers regularly for the Landlord/Tenant Ask-A-Lawyer program where he advises tenants on their legal rights.

As a member of the Gaming Control Board, Terry played an instrumental part in spearheading the Gaming Work Card Denial Project and getting the project up and running. Thanks to this project, many individuals who are denied gaming work cards are now able to have the benefit of a pro bono attorney’s assistance at their Appeal Hearings, thereby improving their chances of work card reinstatement.

The most fulfilling case Terry has worked on involved an elderly couple facing a foreclosure. Terry represented the elderly couple and assisted them by interacting with the bank to reach an amicable resolution. They needed a lot of help and Terry, through his hard work and tenacity, was able to achieve the best solution for them and their needs. When asked why he is involved in pro bono cases, he said he has a desire to give back, has been blessed with a lot of opportunities over the years, and that it’s good to be on the other side helping Nevada residents in need.
