Pro Bono Volunteer of the Month- January 2020
Candace Carlyon of Carlyon Cica CHTD.
Candace Carlyon was raised by a hardworking and generous single mother. She received her Juris Doctorate from Pepperdine University on scholarship and had the privilege of clerking for Nevada Supreme Court Justice Cliff Young. Candace has over thirty years in practice in Southern Nevada including business litigation, commercial bankruptcy and representing lenders. She recently formed the firm Carlyon Cita Chtd. with her partner Dawn Cica.
Candace has been volunteering with the Legal Aid Center of Southern Nevada for about 16 years and has assisted with 24 pro bono matters. Her team and colleagues at Carlyon Cica are all committed to helping those in need of legal services. When we asked why she does pro bono work, she responded “We love making a difference for people in need.” Candace recalls clients she assisted, Mr. and Mrs. Gomez. Mrs. Gomez had to leave to Mexico to seek medical treatment for cancer. This left Mr. Gomez struggling to maintain expenses. When she returned, Mr. Gomez was being garnished for non-payment for a vehicle. He filed BK and they both got a fresh start.
For her commitment to pro bono, we honor Candace Carlyon as our January Volunteer of the Month.
