Volunteer of the Month – September 2024
Gary W. Sutton
After receiving his law degree from Harvard, Gary practiced in New York City with a law firm and with financial institutions, and in Washington DC, where he worked at the Treasury Department to prevent financial crime. He was also pro bono coordinator in the General Counsel’s office of the Treasury Department, and did some volunteer work for the Washington Legal Clinic for the Homeless.
When he and his wife moved to Las Vegas five years ago he sought ways of volunteering, and was happy to learn that Nevada offers an emeritus attorney bar membership that permits lawyers in good standing in other states, to do pro bono work through the Legal Aid Center. Since obtaining this license in 2020 he has represented a number of children in the CAP program as well as in guardianship cases. His most memorable and satisfying case was achieving asylum for a wonderful Afghan family including seven children who were forced to flee Kabul in August 2021; they are now awaiting Green Cards.
Gary particularly appreciates all the help he has received from, and wants to thank, the many Legal Aid Center attorneys who have helped him become familiar with new areas of the law, and the staff who have readily and cheerfully provided him the support he has needed.
For his dedication and commitment to pro bono, we honor Gary as our September 2024 Volunteer of the Month
