Independent Living 2.0
Discover services and support for youth preparing to exit foster care

This in-person CLE will provide an overview of applicable federal and Nevada law governing services and support for youth preparing to exit foster care and transition to independence. The class will cover the role of the independent living caseworker, transition planning, and financial and educational support.

In Nevada, children are parties to an abuse/neglect case brought by a child welfare agency; under Nevada law, those children have a right to representation by an attorney. This class is an introduction to effectively representing children in foster care. Attendees learn how to establish an attorney/client relationship with clients of all ages. The class also provides an overview of the child welfare system and the life of an abuse/neglect case. Lastly, the class touches upon common issues, including sibling connections, mental health, and delayed permanency.

Secondary trauma can be a natural by-product of working with traumatized clients and situations. The symptoms of secondary trauma can mirror those of post-traumatic stress disorder. Secondary trauma can lead to challenges in the workplace, decrease staff morale, and increase turnover and burnout. This training will focus on specific skills based on the CE-CERT model (Components for Enhancing Career Experience and Reducing Trauma) that are easy to learn, use, and apply so that you may enjoy the legal work that you do with committed compassion and continue to grow and learn with clients who have experienced trauma.
