Kara B. Hendricks

Our Volunteer of the Month for this November is Kara Hendricks. Throughout her fifteen years of participation in our Children’s Attorneys Project (CAP), Ms. Hendricks represented thirty-four children across her numerous pro bono cases. In these cases, Kara proceeds with a masterful blend of compassion and determination. These values continue to brighten the lives of her clients, even those undergoing the most tumultuous circumstances– such as mental health concerns and sexual abuse trauma. Despite the additional legal support needed in these difficult circumstances, Kara has always been there to volunteer a helping hand.

At a Legal Aid Center firm visit at Greenberg Traurig’s office, Kara accepted her first pro bono CAP case-- a sibling group consisting of seven children. Kara successfully advocated for all the children to be adopted together by a suitable caregiver. Since this initial case, Kara has represented nearly three dozen children of all ages and backgrounds. Recently, Kara fiercely advocated for two sisters removed from parental custody following a traumatic sexual assault incident. She ensured that her clients received the therapeutic services needed to begin emotionally healing from the impact of this trauma. Ms. Hendricks' favorite aspect of representing children is meeting the client for the first time and explaining her role: “when clients are old enough to understand what an attorney is and that you are there to help them, it is like someone flipping a light switch and a light going on.”

Now, in addition to her own pro bono caseload, Ms. Hendricks regularly encourages new associates at her firm to volunteer with our CAP program, offering mentorship and guidance along the way. Kara noted, “as attorneys we have tools and resources at our disposal that many do not. In CAP cases, you represent children who may feel like they do not have control of their own destiny.” One thing Kara was keen to mention was that sometimes, the most important aspect of pro bono work is not the legal expertise, but the ability to show clients that they have an advocate on their side– “one of my favorite memories is sitting on the floor with an 8-year old client while she made me a bracelet out of rubber bands and told me about her day.  She made sure I took the bracelet home with me because I was doing something to help her, and she wanted to share her talents in a way that might help me too.” Kara’s willingness to extend support, courage, and compassion continually inspires both her clients and her firm members to continue making a positive difference.

Ultimately, Kara states pro bono work is about “[...] giving back to your community and helping those who need it most.” For this reason, we are proud to honor Kara Hendricks as our Volunteer of the Month for November 2025.
